Most homeowners are not experts in chimney maintenance and that is why they hire a chimney sweep. However, it is important when going through the hiring process to seek out a certified chimney sweep, who is an expert in the field. To do that be sure to ask them some common questions a chimney professional should be able to answer before deciding to hire them.

1. Are you a certified chimney sweep?

The number one quality to seek out when hiring a chimney sweep for your home is certification by the Chimney Sweep Institute of America (CSIA). Certified sweeps must present intensive knowledge of chimney systems, safety and building codes, and high standard of service. They must also continue their chimney knowledge and education by becoming members of the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) or a similar organization.

2. What is your experience as a chimney sweep?

A chimney is a highly complicated system. A chimney sweep should be able to properly install and perform maintenance on a chimney as they could inflict serious damage to homeowners if done improperly. Experienced chimney sweeps know what problems to look for that could lead to potential safety or health hazards.

3. Do you have references?

Any good business, including a chimney sweep business, should have references and testimonials to back up their good work. If the doors have been open for any length of time, it should not be too hard to find these.

4. How will you clean my chimney?

It should be little to no difficulty for a chimney sweep to provide step-by-step instructions of their cleaning process. The chimney sweep should be able to tell you how they plan to clean your chimney, and what they intend to do to leave your home mess free.

5. How often should my chimney be swept?

All chimneys, whether they are used or not, should be inspected annually and be swept as needed (usually after high usage times). A professional chimney sweep will tell you the dangers to look for that should require a chimney sweep such as creosote buildup, chimney damage, blockages, and more.

6. Will you also perform an inspection on my chimney?

It is recommended to have a chimney inspection when the chimney is being cleaned. An inspection notifies you of any potential health threats, chimney and flue damage or deterioration, creosote buildup, water intrusion, and plenty more.
